Plushenko wins Marshalls Challenge

April 6, 2004

Three-time World Champion Evgeni Plushenko capped a terrific skating season by winning the Marshalls World Skating Challenge over a star-studded field at Providence, Rhode Island.

Evgeni defended his world championship less than two weeks ago in Dortmund, Germany. He defeated France’s Brian Joubert, whom he also beat at the World Championships.

“If you win the championship, you should just go forward,” Evgeni said. “I skated the last four days. I didn’t jump at all. I just started Monday. It was the final competition of the season, so I’m happy.”

It’s been a successful year and a painful year of skating for Evgeni. He has competed throughout the season with a torn meniscus in his right knee. Evgeni will tour with Champions On Ice on the Spring Tour and then is scheduled to have a procedure to correct his knee injury.

The Marshalls Skating Challenge will be televised in the United States by ABC Sports on May 9 from 1-3 p.m. EDT. Check local listings.

Evgeni still has some autographed pictures available that may be purchased through his Web site.
