Cup of Russia

Evgeni secures No. 1 seed in GP Final!

November 23, 2003

Evgeni Plushenko assured himself of the No. 1 seed in the Grand Prix Final by winning the Cup of Russia in Moscow.

Evgeni has not been defeated in amateur events over the past two years, a streak that covers his last 12 competitions.

He is the defending Grand Prix champion and will compete in the GP Final scheduled for December 12-14 at Colorado Springs, Colorado. Evgeni has scored the maximum 24 points, 12 points are awarded for each win,

Evgeni scored 231.25 points in the new scoring system for the Grand Prix events and won by 20 points over silver medalist Chengijang Li of China.

Evgeni has averaged 232 points in his three competitions with his highest being 234.29 at Trophee Lalique last week. He also won Skate Canada earlier in the season opener in a non-scoring event.

Evgeni had a little difficulty in the opening seconds of his free skate at Cup of Russia. He fell on his opening quad that leads to his trademark quad-triple-double combination. He landed a triple flip but doubled a planned triple loop.

Once past that Evgeni sailed through the remainder of the program with his usual flair.
