Plushenko's performances cancelled
December 10, 2004
Three-time World champion Evgeni Plushenko canceled his skating performance recently with Art On Ice in Prague and Budapest.
Plushenko was in Prague last week to practice for the weekend show but his appearance was cancelled at the last minute. It was Evgeni's first scheduled performance in Prague and a large crowd of enthusiastic fans were expecting to see the dynamic Russian skate.
At issue was Evgeni's amateur eligibility and discussions among the Russian Skating Federation and the International Skating Union resulted in the decision for Evgeni to not jeopardize his eligibility for the coming season and possibly into the Olympic skating season.
Evgeni personally apologized to the audience saying: "Today is the hardest day in my career and in my life because I stay here in front of you and I can't skate for you."
A video was shown at the Sazka Arena of Evgeni's rehearsal of his planned programs this year: "Godfather" and "I will survive".
Evgeni was saddened with the decision and appreciates the outpouring of understanding and support through the many e-mails and letters. Evgeni hopes to return to Prague in the future to reward his fans' loyalty.
